Surfacing the Unseen: Unpacking the Implicit Aspects of the Psychological Contract

In transactional analysis (TA), a Contract is traditionally described as “an explicit bilateral commitment to a well-defined course of action”. Within this Contract we find the three elements: the Administrative, the Professional, and the Psychological. The psychological Contract was defined by Berne as concerning “personal needs of supervisors, superiors and colleagues, of which they themselves may or may not be aware”
This begs the question, if there are times when we are not even aware of it, how does the Psychological Contract fit with the idea that a Contract should be clear and explicit?
And if we are not aware, can it still be called a Contract?
In this workshop we will explore this paradox, discussing a possible change to the definition of TA’s Psychological Contract, and to our understanding of symbiosis, Drama Triangle, Transference and Counter Transference as Contracted phenomena.
