Abstract
Eric Berne originally conceived Transactional Analysis as a theory of personality and a method of psychotherapy, and his clinical approach focused primarily on adults, although his later writings, particularly What Do You Say After You Say Hello?, reveal a deep interest in developmental processes and early relational patterns.
Following Berne, several important contributors expanded the relational and developmental dimensions of TA, and their work deepened our understanding of script formation, attachment dynamics, and the relational unconscious. In Italy, further theoretical and clinical developments integrated relational and body-oriented perspectives, strengthening TA as a contemporary children’s psychotherapy.
Nowadays, TA is a valid psychotherapeutic approach for interventions with children, with broad effectiveness.
Clinical vignettes will be used to illustrate assessment, contracting, treatment planning, and phased intervention. Particular attention will be given to integrating classical TA concepts (ego states, script, injunctions, permissions) with contemporary relational and attachment- informed practice.
The workshop will be interactive and experiential.
Goals
Understand script formation in childhood and how injunctions and early decisions shape psychological development.
Strengthen developmental assessment skills within a TA framework, including ego states and family dynamics.
Learn and practice child-adapted TA interventions, including play-based and relational techniques.
Enhance therapeutic contracting with children and families to support safety, alliance, and developmental repair.
