In Your Own Words – Guided Autobiography : writing and sharing the stories of your life

We often sense how much has happened in a life – choices made, paths taken, losses endured, joys discovered – yet rarely have the space to truly look back and ask: what has this all meant?
This single session draws on the Guided Autobiography (GAB) method developed by Dr. James Birren, where short autobiographical pieces are written and shared in a small, trusted group. Writing in GAB is not about literary skill – it becomes a doorway into reflection, insight, and meaning-making. Stories are read aloud and received with presence and care, without advice or analysis. The experience is, for many, very profound.
This session explores two themes:
Branching Points: the moments when your life took a turn: a new direction, an unexpected opening, a fork in the road you didn’t see coming until you were already on it.
Spiritual Life and Values: our spiritual histories are woven through encounters with people, nature, and religion – experiences that have shaped our philosophies of life and that part of us that resists easy definition. What is the history of your quest for values, truth, and meaning? What people, experiences, or inspirations have guided you along the way?
What this experience offers:
Self-Discovery : Notice the patterns, choices, and turning points that have quietly shaped you
Emotional Integration: Allow memories and feelings to be acknowledged and settled
Meaning-Making: Reflect on experiences you may not have had words for — until now
Something tangible: Leave with a piece of writing — a small, meaningful record of your own story
Connection: Be heard without judgement, and find yourself reflected in others’ stories
A Kinder Relationship with Your Life: Move from self-criticism toward compassion and acceptance
This session is open to anyone who is curious, reflective, and ready to spend a morning with their own story. No writing experience needed.
