Curses and Boons: The Power of the Spoken Word

Across cultures, myths remind us of the profound impact of words. Curses, often uttered in moments of profound anger or grief, have been said to shape destinies—altering the lives of gods, demons, and humans alike. But alongside these, we also encounter boons: words offered in moments of grace, gratitude and generosity, capable of bestowing protection, abundance, growth and possibility.
Both curses and boons point to an essential truth: the spoken word carries a power far beyond the moment it is uttered. It can leave scars or provide solace, stoke fear or inspire hope. What makes words so potent? And, more importantly, how might we use them to foster growth and healing—both in ourselves and those around us?
By exploring curses, we can unearth deeper understandings of retribution, justice, transgenerational trauma, power dynamics, existential fears, physis (the drive toward growth), and cultural taboos. By reflecting on boons, we can delve into themes of permissions, healing, legacy, and the transformative power of affirmative language.
What relevance do curses and boons hold in the modern world? What psychological effects might they have on those who give and receive them? And what pathways to healing might exist for both?
Join us for an hour of thoughtful exploration, where myth and reflection meet wisdom. Together, we’ll weave insights from Transactional Analysis to reflect on the enduring power of words to harm or heal—and learn to wield this power with greater awareness and care.
