Goldmine & Minefield – Humour in the Therapeutic Space

In this impactful 120-minute workshop Psychotherapist John Evans will explore humour and how it relates to the therapeutic space. John will introduce different theories of how humour and laughter work, covering brain function alongside psychological and psychodynamic perspectives.
This workshop will show us how humour can on one hand be damaging and destructive, yet conversely can move us into health and intimacy. Many mental health professionals may avoid use of humour in their work, as they consider it a risky tactic – this is understandable – though may result in missing important opportunities for connection and reframing.
Examples of therapeutic use of humour will be discussed, and there will be opportunities for breakout groups to work with the concepts presented. At the end of the workshop there will be time for discussion, a reading list will be provided to attendees. There will be some jokes along the way…
