Berne’s original Adult ego state was often described as a “computer”—objective, logical, neutral. Keith Tudor suggests this view is too limited: our Adult is always subjective, relational, and shaped by both past and present. His model of the Integrating Adult, or Neopsyche, offers a more expansive and dynamic understanding of how people actually function.

At first glance, Berne’s Adult and Tudor’s Integrating Adult may look similar. But in practice, they are radically different. Tudor’s model invites us to work by expanding the Adult, rather than only deconfusing the Child, opening new pathways for resolving self-limiting, archaic beliefs.

In this 2-hour online session, Paul Robinson, TSTA (E) from the UK, will guide us through the key ideas of the Neopsyche and its implications for practice. Together we will explore how to:

  • See health as the weaving of past experience into a coherent, present-centred self.
  • Honour relational needs as essential rather than problematic.
  • Recognize that growth happens in the here-and-now, in connection with others.

The Integrating Adult is at the heart of co-creative transactional analysis. Understanding this idea equips practitioners to approach therapy as a mutual, present-centred process of growth—with more nuance, humility, and creativity.

This session will also highlight the differences between Berne’s and Tudor’s models of the Adult ego state, and show how Tudor’s framework expands possibilities for personal development and clinical treatment.

This workshop is designed for those who are in, or have completed, Advanced Transactional Analysis Training.
